Once Upon a broken heart

Written by: Stephanie Garber

This book had been recommended to me through “book-tok”, so some of you have probably already heard of it or, at least, the author. However, if you haven’t, that’s no problem! This book follows the story of Evangeline Fox and her search for true love. After hearing of the wedding supposed to take place between her step sister and the love of her life, Evangeline takes matters into her own hands and makes a deal with a wicked Prince of Hearts. The book follows the aftermath of her deal and how it is affecting everyone else around her and her own love story. Evangeline learns just how bad a deal with the devil could be.

In my opinion, I didn’t LOVE the book because it did seem written for a lower level reader and structured as so. I also was not a fan of how the female main character was portrayed as the typical damsel making questionable decisions and not always thinking about a logical solution. However, I did love the Prince of Hearts’ character and the banter between him and Evangeline. I felt like his scenes carried most of the book and the best part of the plot happened towards the final chapters. I will say that I haven’t read the two books following this one in the series, so it may get better and I have to keep y’all updated! I liked the book enough to add the next two to my TBR, so stay tuned for those reviews! Although this book was not my favorite, I hold nothing against the author and do plan to keep reading her other books!

This book is the very first in the Hades and Persephone retelling. The storyline follows how life would be if the gods were living amongst us in our present day world. Hades is the owner of a club called Nevernight, which is incredibly exclusive and acts as the place where he makes his deals with mortals. Hades is known for being "the worst god" and offering unreasonable deals with mortals so that he can claim their souls in the Underworld. One fateful night, he stumbles upon the Goddess of Spring, Persephone, who happens to be dancing along the edge of danger in her search for adventure. Persephone is an unknown Goddess. Her mother, Demeter, kept her hidden away and kept her status a secret from all other gods and goddesses, as well as the world. When Persephone grows up, she begs her mom to let her go to college and live masquerading as a mortal. However, her cover does not last long after meeting the God of the Underworld at his club and accidentally striking a deal of her own. In an effort to keep her freedom, Persephone tries to maintain distance between herself and the infuriating God of the Underworld, but finds that task to be harder than she thought when faced with their burning attraction every time they are in the same room. The novel captures self growth, character development, love, fate, passion and so much more within its pages, you'll find it hard to put down.

While I did thoroughly enjoy reading this book, it was a little harder because of the fact that it was written in third person. Even though I do sometimes enjoy a book in third person, it is not my favorite tense to read. However, with this book, it was easy to ignore the tense and remain being entranced with the actual story. St. Clair does a fabulous job at capturing the Greek tales of gods and goddesses and incorporating them into the real world that we know today. It's incredible the accuracy she maintains in her retelling of the ancient myth when she adds in pieces of a more modern world. I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who loves Greek mythology and doesn't mind falling in love with the villain!
